USD 120 Million Tourism Surge: PGK 414 Million Revenue for Papua New Guinea in 2023

Updated: Jul 20

THE Tourism Promotion Authority (TPA) has revealed that Papua New Guinea experienced a tourism windfall in 2023, generating a total revenue of USD 120 million from visitors traveling into the country. This figure, highlighted in TPA’s 2023 Visitor Arrival Report and PNG International Visitor Survey Report, signifies a remarkable 116 percent surge in tourism compared to the previous year, with over 140,000 visitors arriving via sea and air.

Among the key findings of the reports is a breakdown of visitor purposes, revealing that employment-related visits accounted for 34 percent of arrivals, followed by business trips at 20 percent. Cruise ship visitors contributed to 22 percent of arrivals, while holidaymakers and visitors coming to reunite with friends and relatives each constituted 11 percent and 7 percent, respectively.

The surge in arrivals was particularly notable in air and sea transportation. Air arrivals skyrocketed from 5675 visitors to 16113, marking a substantial increase. Similarly, cruise visitors surged by an impressive 184 percent, rising from 2600 in 2022.

Despite this encouraging growth, PNG’s tourism recovery rate remains a topic of consideration. While the 2023 figures reflect promising growth, the rate of recovery stands at 61 percent lower than pre-pandemic levels in 2019, slightly trailing behind the Asia Pacific region’s average recovery rate of 64 percent.

Eric Mossman Uvovo, CEO of PNG TPA, described the country’s tourism as an evolving industry, noting notable shifts in visitor demographics and market trends. He highlighted the increasing prominence of the Chinese market, which emerged as the second-largest source of holiday visitors to PNG.

Uvovo emphasized the diversification of PNG’s tourism market and expressed confidence in the country’s growing appeal to tourists. He reiterated TPA’s commitment to driving sustained recovery and enhancing strategic market positioning, aiming to promote PNG’s natural beauty and cultural richness to solidify its status as a premier tourist destination in the Asia Pacific region.

As PNG’s tourism sector continues to thrive, Uvovo anticipates memorable experiences for visitors and significant contributions to the nation’s economic growth and development.

Papua New Guinea’s tourism industry witnessed a remarkable resurgence in 2023, as revealed by the Tourism Promotion Authority (TPA) through its recent reports. The country recorded a staggering USD 120 million in revenue from visitors, marking a significant 116 percent surge compared to the previous year. This surge, accompanied by an influx of over 140,000 visitors via sea and air, signals a promising trajectory for PNG’s tourism sector.

The breakdown of visitor purposes, ranging from employment-related visits to holiday trips and reunions with friends and relatives, reflects the diverse appeal of Papua New Guinea as a tourist destination. Additionally, the substantial growth in both air and sea arrivals underscores the increasing accessibility and attractiveness of the country to travelers worldwide.

However, amidst this encouraging growth, PNG’s tourism recovery rate remains a topic of consideration. Despite the impressive figures for 2023, the industry’s recovery rate stands at 61 percent lower than pre-pandemic levels in 2019. While this is a commendable achievement in the face of global challenges, there is still room for improvement to fully restore the sector to its former glory.

Eric Mossman Uvovo, CEO of PNG TPA, rightly characterizes Papua New Guinea’s tourism as an evolving industry. The emergence of the Chinese market as a significant source of holiday visitors signifies the country’s growing appeal on the global stage. Uvovo’s recognition of PNG’s potential to attract tourists from diverse backgrounds reflects a forward-thinking approach to tourism development.

As PNG navigates the complexities of a post-pandemic world, the resilience and potential of its tourism sector shine through. Despite the challenges posed by the global pandemic, the 2023 reports affirm PNG’s status as a premier tourist destination in the Asia Pacific region.

Looking ahead, PNG TPA’s commitment to driving sustained recovery and enhancing strategic market positioning is commendable. By leveraging initiatives and collaborations, Papua New Guinea aims to showcase its natural beauty and cultural richness to the world, further solidifying its place on the global tourism map.

In conclusion, Papua New Guinea’s tourism renaissance offers a beacon of hope amidst challenges. With a renewed focus on promoting sustainable tourism practices and enhancing visitor experiences, PNG is poised to emerge stronger and more resilient in the years to come. As the country continues to attract visitors from around the globe, it reaffirms its position as a hidden gem waiting to be explored.
