PNG Ports Limited (PNG Ports) recently completed a pre-bid site inspection for potential contractors involved in the Kimbe Port Upgrade Project in West New Britain Province. This significant initiative is part of a broader effort to enhance maritime infrastructure across Papua New Guinea, backed by K1.5 billion in funding from the Australian Government, facilitated through the Australian Infrastructure Financing Facility for the Pacific (AIFFP).
Neill Papenfus, CEO of PNG Ports, emphasized the importance of this development. He noted that the contractors, invited to bid for the Marine Package of the Kimbe Port Upgrade Project, gained valuable insights from the inspection. “The inspection provided contractors with a clear understanding of the site’s physical features, the scope of work, and allowed them to address any queries before the bidding period ends,” Papenfus stated.
Currently, the Land Package of the project is in the evaluation stage and is set to proceed following the Marine Package award. Papenfus highlighted the project’s significance, marking it as the first of several ports slated for comprehensive upgrades to meet global industry standards. “The Kimbe Port Upgrade Project will be the first among selected ports to undergo modernization, ensuring they are fit for purpose and aligned with global industry standards,” he added.
Acknowledging the collaborative efforts of various stakeholders, Papenfus expressed gratitude to the Australian Government and its agencies, along with key local entities such as port services providers, PNG Government Departments, and regulatory bodies including the Conservation Environment Protection Authority and the National Maritime Safety Authority. “We appreciate all stakeholders involved in planning and implementing this project,” he said.
PNG Ports also affirmed its commitment to working closely with the West New Britain Provincial Government and local leaders to ensure the project’s successful completion, ultimately benefiting the province’s residents.
Representatives from AIFFP and the Australian Transport Sector Support Program (ATSSP) were present during the site inspection, highlighting the multinational support and collaboration driving this initiative.
The inception of this transformative project can be traced back to the AIFFP’s K1.5 billion blended financial package and PNG Ports’ 20 Year Port Infrastructure Master Plan, launched four years ago.
