A Parent’s Gratitude and Hope

THE impact of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) education is being profoundly felt in Papua New Guinea, as evidenced by the success of students like Keileen Simatab. Keileen, among the country’s top students, is set to travel to the United States to study electrical engineering at South Dakota University, thanks to a fully funded government scholarship.


Her father, Warrick Simatab, a senior public servant, expressed immense gratitude to the Marape-Rosso government for initiating and successfully implementing the STEM education policy. This initiative has not only provided his daughter with a life-changing opportunity but has also relieved him of the financial burden of university fees.

Keileen’s journey began at the Port Moresby National School of Excellence, where she excelled in STEM subjects. She is part of the third batch of PNG students selected under this program, which aims to develop the nation’s future leaders in science and engineering fields. The program targets top-performing students and provides them with opportunities to study abroad, ensuring they gain world-class education and experience.


Prime Minister James Marape recently hosted a farewell dinner for the scholarship recipients, emphasizing the government’s commitment to investing in the nation’s human resources. Mr. Simatab echoed this sentiment, praising the government’s continuous support for higher education. “The STEM Policy has made a significant impact on the lives of many young Papua New Guineans, including my own family,” he said.


Keileen and her peers represent the top five percent of Grade 10 students from 2021, and their selection for this prestigious scholarship marks a pivotal moment in their academic and professional futures. This initiative not only aims to nurture the brightest minds but also seeks to build a robust pipeline of skilled professionals who can drive innovation and contribute to national development.
