Out-of-School-Youths in need of Life Skills training

Updated: May 13

Doa Youth Association Chairman Gunema Laki has called for the establishment of an association that offers young men and women who have dropped out of school - basic life skills training.

This comes after the launch of the Doa Youth Association which is made up of the children of the Doa rubber plantation employees. Laki says one of the challenges that they encountered was registering this Association with the Investment Promotion Authority.

He says previously not a lot of attention has been given to providing these out-of-school youths with such training and the establishment of an association that looks after this will be very beneficial.

Laki has pledged K40,000 as seed money for many projects that the association is looking at committing to.

With this generous amount, he has shown great potential in this association and has come out saying that he is sure he will see a lot of progress in their area now.

One basic life skill that can help school dropouts is money management. Money management skills include budgeting, saving money, and managing finances. This skill can be especially important for school dropouts as it can help them to be more self-sufficient and financially stable.

Having the ability to manage their money effectively, school dropouts can:

  • Prioritize their expenses

  • Plan to pay off any debts

  • Create a savings plan for emergencies or future goals

  • Identify ways to increase their income

By managing their money effectively, school dropouts can reduce the stress and financial insecurity that may have contributed to their decision to drop out of school. This can also help them to better plan for their future and make informed decisions about their education and career choices.

In addition to money management, basic life skills such as time management, communication skills, problem-solving, and decision-making can also help school dropouts to better navigate the challenges they may face and increase their chances of success.

By having these skills, young men, and women, including school dropouts, can increase their chances of success in their personal and professional lives. They can also be more self-sufficient, and less likely to rely on others for financial or emotional support.

Furthermore, these basic life skills can also help young men and women to build resilience and better cope with the challenges they may face in their lives. They can also help them to develop a growth mindset, which can enable them to learn from their mistakes and take the initiative to improve their lives.

According to the United Nations, the dropout rate in Papua New Guinea is relatively high. Dropout rates are high in the country, particularly at the primary and secondary level, due to a variety of factors such as poverty, cultural barriers, lack of resources and infrastructure, and a shortage of qualified teachers. Additionally, some students may drop out of school due to early pregnancies, or to support their families by working.

In summary, basic life skills can play a crucial role in the success of young men and women, including school dropouts, by providing them with the tools and knowledge they need to make informed decisions and navigate the challenges they may face.
