Kerevat Jail facility in dire need of renovation

Updated: May 13

“It’s critical that inmates have access to a safe and hygienic environment.”

Margreth Garap, the Kerevat Jail Commander Superintendent, uttered these statements when she examined the Kokopo Cell Block’s refurbishment.

She called for similar adjustments to be done at the Kerevat Jail Facility as well after being satisfied with what she saw at the facility. She believes that the Kokopo Cell Block is now by far the best she has seen in comparison to the other facilities that she has had the opportunity to work in or witness.

According to Superintendent Garap, inmates must be housed properly for them to be able to attend court proceedings.

She said that those who grow up in decent, orderly families are more self-assured and capable of speaking openly in court.

She has also hinted that the Kerevat Jail facility, which is among the group of other jail facilities in the nation that have been in operation for quite some time, is among those that urgently require a renovation.

To guarantee that convicts and detainees leave the institutions as better citizens of the nation, Superintendent Garap has also issued a call to action to all relevant parties. Additionally, she has stated that she would want to see several initiatives aimed at the rehabilitation of their convicts.

East New Britain Governor Michael Marum assured Superintendent Garap renovationthat her calls for an upgrade of the Kerevat Jail Facility will soon become a reality by saying that they will hold discussions with all relevant stakeholders to determine the logistical and other aspects of such an upgrade for the Kerevat Jail Facility.

While this is still being discussed, according to Governor Marum, preparations are being made for a truck to deliver supplies to the Kerevat Jail Facility, which is currently in need of assistance.

He claimed he anticipates better communication between the province’s correctional facilities and the provincial councils.

Correctional institutions may need to be upgraded for several reasons. The first reason is for safety and security. By addressing concerns like overcrowding, bad lighting, insufficient monitoring, and a lack of security measures, renovations may improve the safety and security of both the convicts and the personnel. To enhance monitoring and reaction times, upgrades can include installing more security cameras, putting in place new security procedures, and hiring more people.

The second purpose is to make sure that laws and regulations are followed, as well as to improve chances for recovery and reintegration into society. These requirements, which cover things like access to healthcare, educational opportunities, and sanitary conditions, may all be met with improved infrastructure. The addition of medical facilities, bettering living circumstances, and offering educational and vocational training programs are all examples of upgrades. Additionally, these improvements can give convicts better chances for recovery and reintegration into society by offering counseling, substance addiction treatment, educational and vocational training programs, as well as additional possibilities for socializing and enjoyment.
