THE Lae Secondary School Robotics Team is making history once again, embarking on an exciting international journey as they depart from Nadzab Airport today for Athens, Greece, to participate in the World Robotics Challenge.
This marks the fifth time the team has represented Papua New Guinea (PNG) at this prestigious event, a testament to their perseverance, talent, and commitment to advancing educational robotics in the country. For these young innovators, the journey is not just about competing - it’s about inspiring future generations and showcasing the potential of education in Papua New Guinea.
Team Composition and Preparation
The team is composed of five dedicated students from Lae Secondary School, each bringing their unique skills and passion for technology. Accompanied by their teacher and team manager, Martha Aaron, the students have been preparing rigorously for the competition, which runs from September 26 to 29.
The 2024 theme, “Feeding the Future,” challenges participants to design robots capable of addressing global issues related to food sustainability and resource management. This year’s event promises to test the creativity, problem-solving abilities, and technical knowledge of students from all around the world.
Lae Secondary School’s robotics team has a strong legacy of participation in international competitions. Over the past years, they have represented PNG in cities around the world, including:
· 2023: Singapore
· 2022: Geneva, Switzerland
· 2019: Dubai, UAE
· 2018: Mexico City, Mexico
Despite the setbacks caused by the global pandemic in 2020 and 2021, which led to the cancellation of competitions, Lae Secondary School has remained committed to the robotics program. Their resilience and dedication have paid off, as they continue to grow as a team and achieve remarkable results on the global stage.
